Immigrant extensions are granted by the Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service. When you enter the U.S., the INS Office places in your passport a small card, that is actually Form I-94. On this white card the INS official writes in a date or the duration of status. Please, be aware of the fact that the date on the Form I-94 is controlling. It means that if you have D/S you may remain in the United States during the period of time you have the same job. If you have a date on your Form I-94, you must apply for your immigrant extensions with INS prior to its expiring.
Applying for immigrant extensions is a complex procedure. All applicants have to produce either a passport or a travel document. Moreover, there's certain documentary evidence that is needed in support of an application.
