A marriage annulment is considered to be a legal procedure that dissolves a couple's marital status by means of establishing that a valid marriage never existed. As a result, the parties return to their prior single status and the marriage is nullified.

The reasons for annulments are different. An annulment, may be obtained under any of the following circumstances: bigamy, fraud, incest, lack of informed consent to the marriage; the husband or wife of the prior marriage was believed to be dead at the time of the subsequent marriage, but in fact he or she was not; unsound mind; force, unless afterwards the party who was forced into the marriage freely cohabited with the other party as husband and wife; or either party, at the time of the marriage, was physically incapable of consummating the marriage, and the incapacity is incurable.

Like a divorce, an annulment is a court procedure that dissolves a marriage, but unlike a divorce, it treats the marriage as though it never happened. If you want to get an annulment, you need to meet the residency requirements of your state. And it's best to seek the advice of an attorney before you proceed.
